charges. >>> police in manassas, virginia, are trying to identify a body found in a pond last night. the man was found in the water between georgiaen county around 10:30, as well. he was found two hours after police first got the call. manassas city police tell 9 news it is possible the body is a man who's been missing in the area since wednesday. >>> police in montgomery county think two people may be involved in the murder of brian betts. the shea middle school principal was found dead inside of his silver spring home. a witness reports seeing a car leave the alley behind brian betts ' home. someone else may have taken his suv. it was found a day later. so far it hasn't given investigators anything to go on. police are desperate for a witness that may come forward and give them a big clue. >> if anyone saw anything suspicious that night and haven't spoken to detectives we need to hear from him. we want input on this case. >> reporter: a private service was held for brian betts in manassas, virginia yesterday. there will be a public memorial may 1st in north bethesda. >>> 11 suspec

ceremonies will be held across virginia today on the third anniversary of the virginia tech massacre. on april 16, 2007, a student opened fire on the blacksburg campus killing 32 people before turning the gun on himself. today at 9:30 a.m., governor bob mcdonald will lead a ceremony at the capitol. as part of the ceremony, the bell tower will ring 32 times in remembrance and honor of the victims. virginia tech has canceled all classes today. >>> on the same day as this anniversary, three virginia congressmen are urging their colleagues to sue closing the gun show loophole. the three are pushing the bill that would require private sellers to perform background check for buyers at gun shows. the families of the victims of the virginia tech tragedy are sue you porting the bill. >>> the pentagon is changing its policy on how privately owned guns can be handled at military installations in wake of year's deadly shooting at ft. hood. robert gates is ordering a new policy to cover all branches of the military. he wants an interim plan in place by june with a permanent policy implemented nex

a developing story in reston virginia right now. a 2-year-old boy has died after falling from the 3rd story window of a home. it happened just before 6:00 tonight on a townhouse on heritage oak park. it appears the child fell through a screen. police say the parents were home at the time and that it appears to have been a tragic accident. >>> we are learning disturbing new details tonight about a high-rise fire last night miraculously everyone made it out safely, despite no fire alarms going off. investigators say it wasn't the first time the system has failed. news4's darcy spencer is the the fire station tonight. darcy? >> reporter: hi, pat. right now there is a mandatory fire watch happening that the apartment complex. that means apartment management has to stay there 24 hours a day walking the hauls making sure that building is safe until the fire system can be repaired. >> reporter: prince george's county fire officials say the condominium building where a two-alarm blaze sent residents from their units friday night has i history code violations. the fire alarm system did not activate
relatives started burying the miners who died in monday's explosion in west virginia. hundreds of people turned out for the two funerals today. at the same time rescuers made their fourth attempt to get into that mine and try and find the four miners who are still missing. 25 miners died in blasts -- in the blast on monday. today the mother of one of those miners said her son, josh napper was sent home last friday after complaining about the ventilation at the upper big branch facility. then he wrote letters to his mother, his fiance and 19-month- old daughter telling them all that he would be looking down on them from heaven if anything ever happened to him. >>> one big question after the explosion is what happens next in the mining industry. it's one of the questions being tackled on this sunday's platts energy week. >> for the safety question congress has to act. it will be impossible for them no have gotten -- to have gotten close in 2008 and stop now. we need to see tighter regulation of the overseer of mining safety. >> you can see more of the conversation that sunday morning 8:00

. >>> now to west virginia where crews are continuing to make a long five-mile trek in hopes finding four miners alive. they got the all clear to are in the mine just minutes ago. rescue teams say they are prepared if a long, long day. they have their plans and they're ready to find the missing men. will thomas continues to bring us live reports from montcoal. >> reporter: four teams of rescuers should be inside the mine right now trying to get to the four missing miners. we are told it should take two to three hours to reach the area where they were believed to be. the # # rescuers are kayying about 30 pounds of equipment. the men had to shave off all their facial hair to get a tight seal around their oxygen mask. a total of 18 miners are still inside. all but four are now con furthermored dead. >>> crews focus you had on drilling multiple bore holes to remove the dangerous levels of methane and carbon monoxide. we are told as that ventilation process began, some of the workers at the top of the bore hole actually started getting sick and that is just how dangerous the air quality was.
